How To GrowĀ Red Opium Poppy From Seed: Sow poppy seeds directly into the spot in the garden where they are to grow. Sprinkle the seeds thinly into a prepared shallow drill, and cover lightly with soil. Keep the area moist until germination has occurred.
When the seedlings establish, thin them to leave roughly 25cm between each plant. Keep the strongest of the seedlings. The plants can grow over 1 metre in height. Each plant will produce many flowers, each flower only lasting a few days.
Alternatively, sow the seed in large pots. Try not to transplant poppies, as they donāt take well to this.
Red Opium Poppy is a great source of pollen for honey bees. Butterflies also adore this beautiful flower.
